Battery storage (BESS)

Battery storage sites in Germany, developed to ready-to-build

We develop projects of 20–85 MW, from site search to sale. Each is sold ready-to-build: site, high-voltage (110 kV) grid connection and permits secured, so construction can start.

Why grid storage

Battery storage for a stable power supply

Electricity in the grid runs at a frequency of 50 hertz (50 cycles per second). Oversupply pushes this frequency up; shortage pulls it down. As wind and solar replace fossil-fuel and nuclear plants, these swings grow. A battery takes in surplus power and releases it when supply runs short. This balancing keeps the grid stable. It supports Germany's target of 80% renewable electricity by 2030.

Grid frequency around 50 hertz: above 50 is over-supply, below 50 is scarcity; battery storage charges or discharges to bring it back.

Project profile

What we develop

Current projects:

Size

20–85 MW (megawatts) per project.

Grid

high-voltage connection at 110 kV.

Design

mainly AC-coupled (alternating current).

Supplier

manufacturer-independent. We are not tied to one battery maker.

Site

each project is planned for its site.

How we develop

Typically 8–12 months from grid reservation to ready-to-build

Secure the site

We identify suitable land and secure it. Before we commit, we check it for construction and operation: soil, unexploded ordnance, noise and fire safety.

Grid reservation

The grid operator reserves connection capacity for the project.

Grid planning

Technical planning of the high-voltage, 110 kV, connection.

Permits

  • BESS: building permit

  • Substation: building permit

  • Cable route: rights of way from landowners, and crossing permits (roads, rail, waterways)

Ready-to-build

Permits and grid connection secured. We sell the project.

Financial close

We support the buyer until its financing is in place.
